WHY THE OLD BLINKING LIGHT?
For many years the intersection of the Questa Highway and the Ski Valley Road, exactly one mile west of the restaurant, was controlled by a yellow blinking caution light. Taos didn’t have many intersections or traffic lights, so all route directions north of town referred to the “blinking light.” To get to the Ski Valley, for instance, “go four miles north from the Plaza and turn right at the blinking light.” It was an important landmark. When the wheels of progress replaced our blinking light with an assortment of modern traffic control lights, Taoseños, who don’t necessarily embrace change, only modified their directions by saying “Go four miles north of the Plaza to the old blinking light and turn right.”
When the name of the restaurant, which was also a landmark, had to be changed, the name “The Old Blinking Light,” suggested in a moment of nostalgia by a long time member of our wait staff, seemed a good way of attracting the attention of Taoseños and of all of the visitors who for years had been guided by the original blinking light. And it gives the long-timers the opportunity to tell the newcomers of our beloved Old Blinking Light.
